How to run a football prediction league with your mates

Every group chat has someone who swears they know football. A prediction league puts that to the test: everyone calls the same matches, points are added up, and one person gets the bragging rights. Here's how to set one up that people actually stick with.

Start a free battle

1. Decide how long it runs

Short rounds keep people interested. A single matchday or weekend is easy to commit to, and anyone who has a bad week can come back fresh next time. If your group wants a season-long rivalry, run a new battle each round and add them up in one league table.

  • One weekend: best for first-timers and big groups.
  • One midweek round: good for Champions League or Europa League nights.
  • A whole season: link each round's battle to one league so the table builds up.

2. Pick the matches

Ten games is a good number — enough to separate people, not so many that picking becomes a chore. Mixing in a big derby or a cup tie gives everyone something to talk about.

On Cosmic Oracle you can add games one by one, or tap a competition such as the Premier League, Championship, La Liga or Scottish Premiership to fill the battle with up to 20 fixtures at once. You can choose games up to 14 days ahead, and mix in rugby, cricket, tennis or racing if your group follows more than football.

3. Keep the scoring simple

The simplest rule is the fairest: call the result (home win, draw or away win) and score 3 points for each one you get right. Nobody needs a spreadsheet, and newcomers can compete with the know-it-alls.

Agree what happens to postponed matches before you start. On Cosmic Oracle a called-off match is voided for everyone and every player is told, so no one gains or loses from it.

4. Get everyone in with one link

The biggest reason prediction leagues fizzle out is that people never get round to joining. Send one short link straight into the group chat and make it easy: friends can open it, make their picks, then create a free profile to save them.

  1. Name the battle something the group will recognise ("Sunday League Legends — Matchday 9").
  2. Add your games and save.
  3. Share the invite link to WhatsApp or wherever your group talks.
  4. Remind people once before the first kick-off — picks lock when each game starts.

5. Add a forfeit, not a cash pot

A forfeit gives the league a bit of edge without anyone handing over money. "Last place buys the first round" or "loser wears a rival team's shirt to five-a-side" works far better than a kitty that someone has to collect and pay out.

Forfeits on Cosmic Oracle are optional and opt-in: the creator suggests one, each player chooses whether they're in, and the winner can mark it as done once it's been paid.

6. Keep the banter going

The table is only half the fun. A battle chat where people can gloat after a late winner keeps the group coming back between rounds, and a shareable victory card for whoever is crowned the Oracle gives the winner something to post.
