Forfeit ideas for the loser of your league

A good forfeit is the best part of any mini-league: it's funny, it's fair and it gives everyone a reason to care about the last game of the round. These ideas work for Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues, prediction battles and race-day picks — none of them cost much and none of them involve gambling.

Rules for a good forfeit

The best forfeits share a few things in common. Keep these in mind and nobody will try to wriggle out of it.

  • Agree it before the first game, not after someone is losing.
  • Make it cheap or free — the embarrassment is the point, not the cost.
  • Keep it safe and kind. Nothing dangerous, nothing that embarrasses someone at work, nothing that relies on drinking.
  • Set a deadline, such as "before the next round starts".
  • Decide what happens in a tie: do the joint losers share it, or does each one do it?

Food and drink forfeits

The classics, because they're easy to settle the next time you're together.

  • Last place buys the first round.
  • Loser buys the winner a coffee every day for a week.
  • Loser brings the snacks to the next match night.
  • Winner picks the next takeaway and the loser orders it.
  • Loser bakes something for the group — and it has to be eaten in front of them.

Football shirt and kit forfeits

  • Last place wears a rival team's shirt to five-a-side.
  • Loser wears the winner's team scarf for a whole match day.
  • Loser has to cheer for the winner's team in the next big game — out loud.
  • Loser's kit for the next kickabout is chosen by the group.

Social media and group chat forfeits

Good for groups spread across different towns, because they can be settled online.

  • Loser changes their profile picture to the winner's choice for a week.
  • Loser posts a glowing tribute to the winner in the group chat.
  • Loser can only reply in emojis for 24 hours.
  • Loser renames themselves in the group chat to whatever the winner chooses.
  • Winner chooses the loser's ringtone or alarm for a week.

Harmless, slightly embarrassing forfeits

  • Loser reads the final league table aloud like a news presenter.
  • Loser does the winner's chores for a day.
  • Winner picks the playlist on the next car journey or night in.
  • Winner picks the film for movie night — no complaints allowed.
  • Loser holds the wooden spoon (a real one) in the group photo until someone else finishes last.

How to make sure the loser pays up

Write the forfeit down where everyone can see it before the games start. On Cosmic Oracle you can add one when you create a battle, either from a ready-made list or in your own words (up to 80 characters). Each player chooses whether they're in, the forfeit is shown on the final results, and the winner taps to mark it as done once it's been paid.

Everything stays between friends: the site doesn't collect, hold or pay out anything.

Questions

Do forfeits count as gambling?
A harmless forfeit agreed between friends, with no money pooled or paid out, isn't a bet. Cosmic Oracle battles never involve money.
Does everyone have to take part in the forfeit?
No. On Cosmic Oracle each player opts in to the forfeit separately, and anyone who doesn't still plays for bragging rights.
What if two people tie for last?
Agree it up front. When you set a forfeit on Cosmic Oracle you choose whether joint losers share it or each do it in full.
